The Buddhacharita is a long epic poem by Ashvaghosha , of which about 13 authentic cantos are now available. It had been current in India even in the seventh century and have been translated into Tibetan and Chinese. It deals with the life of the Buddha and has highly embellished descriptions as well as movement. The actual teachings are not put down. The focus is on a description of Buddha in his palace, surrounded by luxuries, and restless for a permanent solution from life's miseries. The actual teachings of the Buddha are not in it. In 18 cantos, Saundara-nanda deals with the city of Kapilavastu where Buddha (then Prince Siddhartha) was born and with the experiences of Siddhartha's half-brother Nanda. |
