The founder of General Pictures Corporation, that would in time become the largest production unit of South India, Narayanan was involved with the film world before he founded his own company. In 1927 - he was running Exhibitor Film Services. In 1928 - he went abroad with Irani's Anarkali in a bid to popularize Indian films. In 1929 - founded General Pictures Corporation. The interaction between the film centres - Bombay, Calcutta and Madras - is best illustrated by the fact of Narayanan inducting two Calcutta cameramen into his team. These two - Dhiren Dey and Sailen Bose - went beyond simply training the South Indian technicians: they believed in and supported the creation of new film units. General Pictures produced nearly 24 silent films. SOURCE Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema. |
