Manipuri

The slow undulating dance of the female dancers set this dance form in a league of its own. The immobile facial stance is a characteristic feature, very different from the other classical dances of India. In sharp contrast to the females, the male drummer dances a veritable whirlwind to the beating of his own drum.

The entire community takes part in Sankirtan and Raas, two traditions of dance and music that are performed at the stipulated time of year. The underlying theme is the devotion to Vishnu, and the physical expression of this (dance) has remained unchanged through time.

Notable Manipuri dancers: Atomba Singh and Amubi Singh.
